"The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.” John F. Kennedy
"The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe." HL Mencken
I love these photos.
Spc. Ruth McClary photographed these soldiers recently in Iraq, in response to a gift from Mountain State University's Operation Cougar Care 2009. Through Operation Cougar Care, students, faculty, and staff from MSU raised over $8700 for Calvary Pride, an organization that provides care packages, phone cards, and a homecoming awards ceremony and banquet to support the Soldiers of the 150th Armored Reconnaissance Squadron, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team.
I recently wrote a post about Mountain State University's program for veterans and active duty military members. Our support of the troops extends beyond the classroom, though, to our students who are actively serving overseas, their squadrons, and their families.
The troops: half a world away on the battlefields of Iraq, working to ensure the freedom and safety of others. Their families: waiting, longing, praying.
As we celebrate Independence Day over this long weekend, let's not forget these families who are separated from their loved ones serving overseas. Let our celebration also be for them, and their dedication to keeping us free no matter what it costs.
For a powerful first hand account of a Fourth of July spent in combat and a call for more support for returning troops, read Paul Rieckhoff's post here.

Hi Becky, great pics, great post. If your readers want to do something that directly supports and benefits our troops they can do it at www.anysoldier.com. It's not about politics, it's about people!
Hope you have a terrific holiday!
