BECKLEY- Bingo paid off in a big way for Mountain State University in the first week of May. Janet Hinton, a clinical coordinator for the MSU Medical Assisting program, received a phone call from her aunt, Judy Presley. Presley, a regular bingo player let Hinton know that during a weekly bingo game, an organizer with the Mountain State Regular Veterans Association Post 57 (MSRVA), Dottie Hann, asked if anyone in the audience knew someone who worked for Mountain State University. The veterans group runs fundraisers throughout the year and pledges to schools all over the state.
Hann stated that MSRVA Post 57 wanted to make a $5,000 donation to the school. The MSU employee’s aunt (Presley) raised her hand, took the information and quickly passed it to her niece. Hinton called and was told that all they had to do to receive the donation was to attend bingo the following week.
Upon arrival, the representatives received a great surprise. According to Frances Hash, director of Medical Assisting at MSU, “Dottie told us that the check was for $5,000.00. We were so grateful and anxious to pick it up. However, when they presented us the check, they surprised us again by making the donation double the originally promised amount, $10,000.00. We are deeply appreciative for MSRVA’s support. The money will be put to use to enhance the education of local medical assisting students. ” Plans for the funds will include updates of the current laboratory with new medical equipment, supplies and technology.
